Winter is a beautiful and serene time of the year -- a time for introspection, and moving inward. We feel a need to slow our pace, stay warm, and sleep more.
As magical as this time of year can be, it is also harsh on our skin, especially areas that are exposed to the elements. The air is dry, and the winds are cold and unforgiving. This dry air causes skin to flake and crack, especially on our feet. The face may feel dry and rough, as if it needs more moisture. Staying hydrated is very important during this season, and increasing water intake may help. It is also important to cover areas that are exposed to the elements. Mature skin is especially vulnerable to the elements, and needs extra hydration to keep it smooth and supple.
Mild exfoliation is wonderful for facial skin. Products that gently remove the top layer of dead skin cells promote blood circulation and expose new layers of skin. This can even be accomplished with a damp washcloth, moving in gentle circles over the face. Once the dead cells are removed, and skin is still damp, it is the ideal time to hydrate with organic products to lock in the moisture.
Feet are another troublesome area of our body during the winter months. Exfoliation can be done with a pumice stone, after cleaning and soaking feet in a tub of warm water. Once all of the dead and dry skin is removed from heels and soles, foot cream should be liberally applied, and covered with socks overnight. By following these steps each day, feet will begin to feel silky and smooth.
What type of products should you look for? The best choice are those containing only organic ingredients, without additives, preservatives, chemicals, colors, or artificial fragrance oils. Many of these synthetic products will further dry and harm skin, and as they pass through the epidermis and dermis and enter the bloodstream, will circulate toxins throughout our body. By choosing products that are almost "edible," we can be assured that our skin will benefit the most and be super healthy and pliable.
If you decide to make the change from synthetic products to natural skin and body care, you will surely recognize the benefits within a very short period of time. Choosing products that are pure and organic, especially those which include essential oils, will also provide sumptuous and uplifting aromas which will surely brighten winter days.
